 There are several different approaches and kinds of foundations we use when building sheds. There are two objectives: 1) soundness and 2) stability. The base structure of the shed must be engineered to be strong enough to support the materials it is built with and the contents it will contain. If it is not, the floor will warp and stretch, causing failure of the walls and roof. If it will be used to store handheld yard tools, then it could be built lighter than if it will be used to store a riding lawn mower and bags of dirt or cement. Also, the length and width will determine the size and spacing of the lumber used. It’s always a good practice to refer to a professional—like an architect—when determining the best design. 

The shed can be built remotely, delivered and set at the desired location, or it can be built on site. If it’s built on site, I prefer to dig holes and set posts in concrete for the best stability and structural soundness. If your shed will be built off-site and delivered, then rails for ease of movement and concrete blocks for leveling and support are commonly used. 4x4 or 4x6 posts can be used for rails, so we can slide the shed on and off a trailer and eventually into position.  

Drawing up or purchasing construction plans is a great way to ensure a good design and help make an accurate materials list. There are plans available online, and some Lowe's and Home Depot stores have design services at the pro desk.  

In this first session, we will look over our shed plan, organize some lumber, introduce the tools, learn some simple carpentry techniques, and maybe start on the base structure.
